The Musica Silvestra Orchestra (MSO) is the student symphony orchestra of Enschede. Each year, MSO prepares a concert programme twice a year with a couple of concerts as result. The MSO is conducted by the enthusiastic Peter Bogaert. The orchestra mainly consists of students and employees of the University of Twente and Saxion, but everybody can be a member!
The programmes can be considered as diverse. The repertoire does not only consist of symphonies and ouvertures, but also film music is frequently performed. Furthermore, the orchestra has accompanied several choirs and solists in the past. On top of that, MSO collaborated with the rockband InWaves in the summer of 2014!
We rehearse every Monday evening from 20:00 until 22:30 in the Agora of the Vrijhof, which is located on the campus of the University of Twente. After rehearsals, most members stay a little longer to drink something in the Theatercafé of the Vrijhof. Next to the weekly rehearsals, we organize a rehearsal weekend during each programme. During this weekend, which is usually held at a camping farm, not only the quality of our playing is increased. It is also a lot of fun and a great way for the members to get to know each other better. Furthermore, the VraXie (Activity Committee) organizes some fun activities.
The concerts of MSO do not only take place in Enschede or at the Campus of the UT. In recent years the MSO has performed in cities Hengelo, Zwolle and Apeldoorn or villages close to Enschede, such as Haaksbergen and Lonneker. The MSO can also be witnessed outside the Netherlands. In the past, we made international concert trips to Tuscany (2011), Krakow (2013) and Glasgow (2015).
In 2015, we celebrated our fiftieth anniversary by organizing a huge concert in the Grote Kerk in Enschede with an old-member orchestra, which was established especially for the occasion. As part of the festivities, we organized a wonderful concert trip to Glasgow.
